How to enable Administrator account in Windows 8.1 & Windows 10 Home Single Language

Use the following steps to active administrator account.

  1. Open the command prompt as Administrator

Normally, the command prompt can be opened as a regular user to run commands that don’t require administrative rights. However, if you need to run a command that requires administrative rights, you must open the command prompt window as administrator.

  • The first method of accessing the command prompt as administrator is to right-click on the Start button  1  in the lower-left corner of the screen and select the Command Prompt (Admin) option from the  User menu.

You can also press the Windows key + X to access this menu.

–  The second method involves the Start screen. If you are currently on the Desktop, click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

On the Start screen, start type “command prompt” (without the quotes). The Search panel displays on the right side of the screen and results of the search display as you type. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator from the popup menu.

So now you are opened the command prompt in administrator mode.

2. Type below given command to see the users list:

3. Unlock the administrator account.

How to: Determine Which .NET Framework Versions Are Installed

Users can install and run multiple versions of the .NET Framework on their computers. When you develop or deploy your app, you might need to know which .NET Framework versions are installed on the user’s computer.

Note that the .NET Framework consists of two main components, which are versioned separately:

  • A set of assemblies, which are collections of types and resources that provide the functionality for your apps. The .NET Framework and assemblies share the same version number.
  • The common language runtime (CLR), which manages and executes your app’s code. The CLR is identified by its own version number.

To get an accurate list of the .NET Framework versions installed on a computer, you can view the registry.

To find .NET Framework versions by viewing the registry (.NET Framework 1-4)

  1. On the Start menu, choose Run.
  2. In the Open box, enter regedit.exe.

You must have administrative credentials to run regedit.exe.

3. In the Registry Editor, open the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP

The installed versions are listed under the NDP subkey. The version number is stored in the Version entry. For the .NET Framework 4 the Version entry is under the Client or Full subkey (under NDP), or under both subkeys.

  1. On the Start menu, choose Run.
  2. In the Open box, enter regedit.exe.

Note that the path to the Full subkey includes the subkey Net Framework rather than .NET Framework.

Check for a DWORD value named Release. The existence of the Release DWORD indicates that the .NET Framework 4.5 or newer has been installed on that computer.

How to enable the ‘God Mode’ in Windows 10

Windows 10 “GodMode” is the feature something that not many Windows users will be aware of. However,

GodMode is built into Windows 10, just as it was in previous Windows versions.

In fact, its real name is the Windows Master Control Panel shortcut.

Follow the steps given below to enable the God Mode in your Windows 10:

  1. Create a new folder on your Windows desktop (New –>Folder) and save it with the name: {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
  2. The folder’s icon will change to an icon as of a Control Panel. Double-click on the new icon to see your universal settings panel.
  3. You can name the folder other than “GodMode”; before the Period (.).
  4. Now, click the folder, open it and get God-like access to more than 260 functions and tools.

Some functions are unique to Windows 10 while others are similar to the previous versions of Windows.

when you open that folder, you can see around 40 different settings, including Devices and Printers, Credential Manager, Indexing, etc. Some variations exist depending if you have a Home or Pro version and different hardware.

Note – your system account must have administrative privileges for this folder to work.

How to find system up-time on Windows 7, 8 & 2008 Server

If you leave your computer on for extended periods of time, it’s usually a good idea to perform a reboot now and then. Furthermore, if you’re managing multiple computers, it’s difficult to remember when each received a reboot. That’s why Windows keeps track of your total up-time and the last time your computer booted for you. Here’s how to access those pieces of information:

To find total up-time:

Step 1: Launch the task manager. You can do this in one of three ways:

Choice 1: Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. On the screen that appears, select Start Task Manager.

Choice 2: Right click on the taskbar and select Start Task Manager.

Choice 3: Press CtrlL+Shift+Esc to launch the task manager directly.

Step 2: In this window, click on the Performance tab.

Step 3:  Your system’s up-time is displayed next to Up Time (highlighted in the above picture) in the format of Days: Hours: Minutes: Seconds

To find last boot date:

Go to Start  –> Run –> cmd

Starting with Windows 2000, Microsoft has provided a powerful utility, Netsh, which lets you display and modify the network configuration of Windows computers. You can use the Netsh on the command line or in a batch file. Here’s an example of how you can create a batch file that changes the IP address of the local machine.

Netsh is a command-line scripting utility that allows you to, either locally or remotely, display or modify the network configuration of a computer that is currently running. Netsh also provides a scripting feature that allows you to run a group of commands in batch mode against a specified computer. Netsh can also save a configuration script in a text file for archival purposes or to help you configure other servers.

In my environment, we don’t use DHCP. We use static IP addresses. Using static IP addresses usually doesn’t present any problems because we rarely move desktops between locations. However, the people who use laptops usually visit multiple locations. At each location, they’ve been assigned a separate IP address. Each time they change location, they look up the appropriate network settings in a .txt file, then manually change those settings. This occasionally creates problems because they have to remember the correct steps to change their network settings and sometimes they mistakenly enter wrong numbers.

I found a solution. For each location, I created a simple batch file that the laptop users can run. Whenever they want to change their IP settings, all they have to do is execute the appropriate batch file.

The batch file uses the Netsh utility and contains below given commands.

Copy the code given below in the Notepad and save it with the .bat extension.

– Run the .bat file with double click.

– In the some cases, the .bat file needs to run with administrator’s privileges. Right-click on the .bat file and choose “Run as administrator“.

The Pixel Painter

I was shooting the breeze with my friend about the photography yesterday. While chatting, my friend told Photography is a costly hobby. I didn’t agree with that statement, because at present we can take photos with our smart phones itself, no need to buy a camera separately, no need to buy film, no need to pay film developing charges, no need to take prints. If our phone memory card is full, just we have to move the photos to our laptop or external HDD. We can share the photos with our family and friends directly by uploading to cloud storage or social networking sites.

Today morning while I was reading on the net, I read one article about 98-year-old Hal Lasko, “The Pixel Painter”, better known as Grandpa. An absolutely beautiful and inspirational story, involving a Microsoft product. This just proves that it’s not the software or hardware that makes a good artwork. It’s the artist and how he/she uses it. I believe below given sentence is hundred percent apt for him.

A great artist can make beauty out of any medium, no matter how limited.

Hal Lasko, better known as Grandpa, Born before the invention of broadcast radio, Lasko spent his career as a commercial graphic designer, working with his hands to create typography and design. Before retiring, Lasko spent 10 years working at American Greetings, styling the fonts and cards.

A little more than 10 years ago, Hal Lasko began to lose his eyesight. Things appeared blurry, reading on paper was nearly impossible and colours were washed out. A condition called wet macular degeneration was making it nearly impossible for the World War II veteran and retired designer to keep up with his oil painting.

On Lasko’s 85th birthday, his grandchildren gifted him a computer and introduced the artist to Microsoft Paint. The program allows Lasko to magnify the area large enough to draw pixel by pixel.

While most people have long since abandoned MS Paint as an outdated graphics application, Lasko has spent the last 13 years using the program to digitally create works of art, spending up to 10 hours a day on his work. Originally a traditional painter, he switched to MS Paint full-time in 2005 when his vision was impaired by wet macular degeneration, an eye disease that causes blindness in the center of his vision. He has since created more than 150 digital works, though his blindness means he will never be able to view them in their totality.

Those prints are available on his very own website  http://hallasko.com/collections/prints and sold for $98 each in honour of his 98th birthday. Because he is a veteran of World War II, 10% of all sales goes to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A short documentary showcases the art of Hal Lasko. In this short documentary, the artist’s grandson Ryan Lasko and co-director Josh Bogdan trace the story of Hal Lasko, from his beginnings as a “lettering man” up through his current projects on the computer. The film showcases his computer creations and includes interviews with Lasko about his family, his process, and his philosophies.

Microsoft Names Satya Nadella Its New CEO:

Microsoft Corp.  Announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Satya Nadella as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors effective immediately.  Before being named CEO in February 2014, Nadella held leadership roles in both enterprise and consumer businesses across the company.

Joining Microsoft in 1992, he quickly became known as a leader who could span a breadth of technologies and businesses to transform some of Microsoft’s biggest product offerings.

Most recently, Nadella was executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group. In this role he led the transformation to the cloud infrastructure and services business, which outperformed the market and took share from the competition. Previously, Nadella led R&D for the Online Services Division and was vice president of the Microsoft Business Division. Before joining Microsoft, Nadella was a member of the technology staff at Sun Microsystems.

Originally from Hyderabad, India, Nadella lives in Bellevue, Wash. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. He is married and has three children.

Disk partitioning is the act of dividing a hard disk drive (HDD) into multiple logical storage units referred to as partitions, to treat one physical disk drive as if it were multiple disks, so that different file systems can be used on each partition

Benefits of having multiple Partitions:

Creating more than one partition has the following advantages:

  • Separation of the operating system (OS) and program files from user files. This allows image backups (or clones) to be made of only the operating system and installed software.
  • Keeping frequently used programs and data near each other.
  • Having cache and log files separate from other files. These can change size dynamically and rapidly, potentially making a file system full.
  • Use of multi-boot setups, which allow users to have more than one operating system on a single computer. For example, one could install Linux, BSDMac OS XMicrosoft Windows or other operating systems on different partitions on the same HDD and have a choice of booting into any compatible operating system at power-up.
  • Protecting or isolating files, to make it easier to recover a corrupted file system or operating system installation. If one partition is corrupted, other file systems may not be affected.
  • Raising overall computer performance on systems where smaller file systems are more efficient. For instance, large HDDs with only one NTFS file system typically have a very large sequentially accessed Master File Table (MFT) and it generally takes more time to read this MFT than the smaller MFTs of smaller partitions.
  • Partitioning for significantly less than the full size available when disk space is not needed can reduce the time for diagnostic tools such as checkdisk to run or for full image backups to run.
Disadvantages of multiple partitions:
  • Reduces the total space available for user storage on the disk, as it forces the operating system to duplicate certain file system administration areas on the disk for each partition.
  • Reduces overall disk performance on systems where data is accessed regularly and in parallel on multiple partitions, because it forces the disk’s read/write head to move back and forth on the disk to access data on each partition and to maintain and update file system administration areas on each partition. It also prevents disk optimizers from moving all frequently accessed files closer to each other on the disk, which could reduce the number and distance of required head movements. Files can still be moved closer to each other on each partition, but those areas themselves will still be far apart on the disk. This issue does not apply to Solid-state drives as access times on those are neither affected by nor dependent upon relative sector positions.
  • Increases disk fragmentation because it lowers the average size of continuous free blocks on each partition – as compared to a single partition of the same overall size – after the same amount of data has been written to them.
  • May prevent using the whole disk capacity, because it may break free capacities apart. For example, if you have a disk with two partitions, each with 3 GB free (hence 6 GB in total), you can’t copy a 4 GB DVD image file on that disk, because none of the partitions will actually provide enough space for that – even though you have more than enough free capacity in total on the disk. If the same files on those two partitions would have been stored on a single partition spanning the whole disk, then the 4 GB file could be easily stored in the 6 GB of free space.
  • Hurts portability and might impose constraints on how entities might be linked together inside the file system.

Creating a Partition on Windows 8:

Hold the Windows logo key on your keyboard and press “R” (Winkey+R). This will launch the Run the utility. Type “diskmgmt.msc” inside the text box and press Enter. This will open the Windows Disk Management utility. This is where you can format, create, and delete hard drive partitions.

1In order to create a partition, you need unallocated space. Unallocated space is basically disk space that is not formatted or not prepared for storage. Formatting is the act of preparing a disk space for storage. It’s similar to establishing a foundation for a place to be inhabited. Thus, unallocated space is just useless blank space with no “foundation” or format.

To create unallocated space, you need to shrink your hard drive. When you shrink your hard disk, the remaining space becomes unallocated.

To do this, right-click your main drive and select “Shrink Volume.”

Now you need to enter the amount you want to shrink the hard disk by in megabytes (1000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte). For example if you want to create a 1 gigabyte partition, enter 1,000 megabytes in the text box. Now click “Shrink.”

The Disk Management Utility will show you the maximum amount of shrink space available. That’s the maximum size that can be allocated to the new partition.

You will then see the region of unallocated space (shaded black). Please note that  this space is not yet usable

Now you need to create “new volume” and format  the unallocated space. This will allow for the space to become usable.

Right-click the region of unallocated space and select “New Simple Volume.”

This will launch the New Simple Volume Wizard. This will guide you through the installation process.

Assign the disk a drive letter. You can choose any drive letter that is not currently in use.

Select a file system for the disk. The file system is basically the type of format or “foundation” the storage device has. If you plan on installing a Windows OS to the partition select the “NTFS” file system.

Name the partition in the “Volume Label” text box.  You can choose any name for your partition.

Now click “Finish” to create the new partition.

If you, or your workplace, are still using Windows XP, it’s time to move on. 

Microsoft will officially end support for the 2001-vintage platform on April 8, 2014.

That means no more service packs, no more updates and, most importantly, no more security patches.

Windows users generally receive periodic updates from Microsoft via its Windows Update service. These fixes often patch irregular behaviour in the operating system.

XP users are, of course, welcome to continue using their OS of choice after April 2014, but this behaviour entails a number of risks.

Why is Microsoft ending support for Windows XP and Office 2003?

In 2002 Microsoft introduced its Support Lifecycle policy based on customer feedback to have more transparency and predictability of support for Microsoft products. As per this policy, Microsoft Business and Developer products, including Windows and Office products, receive a minimum of 10 years of support (5 years Mainstream Support and 5 years Extended Support), at the supported service pack level.

What is the risk of continuing to run Windows XP after its end of support date?

When Microsoft releases a security update, security researchers and criminals will often times reverse engineer the security update in short order in an effort to identify the specific section of code that contains the vulnerability addressed by the update. Once they identify this vulnerability, they attempt to develop code that will allow them to exploit it on systems that do not have the security update installed on them. They also try to identify whether the vulnerability exists in other products with the same or similar functionality. For example, if a vulnerability is addressed in one version of Windows, researchers investigate whether other versions of Windows have the same vulnerability. Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) releases security updates for all affected products simultaneously.  This practice ensures customers have the advantage over such attackers, as they get security updates for all affected products before attackers have a chance to reverse engineer them.

But after April 8, 2014, organizations that continue to run Windows XP won’t have this advantage over attackers any longer.  The very first month that Microsoft releases security updates for supported versions of Windows, attackers will reverse engineer those updates, find the vulnerabilities and test Windows XP to see if it shares those vulnerabilities.  If it does, attackers will attempt to develop exploit code that can take advantage of those vulnerabilities on Windows XP.  Since a security update will never become available for Windows XP to address these vulnerabilities.

Security technology in Windows XP was never really that great, even if it got a lot better with SP2, but the product was a runaway smash hit to such an extent that we may never be rid of it. Next April will be 12 years since Windows XP was made generally available; this is an astonishingly long time to keep supporting a software product. Nobody else keeps support life spans like Microsoft; with Windows XP they actually extended the normal 10 year life by 2 years.

As for the security mitigations that Windows XP Service Pack 3 has, they were state of the art when they were developed many years ago.  But we can see from data published in the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report that the security mitigations built into Windows XP are no longer sufficient to blunt many of the modern day attacks we currently see.  The data we have on malware infection rates for Windows operating systems indicates that the infection rate for Windows XP is significantly higher than those for modern day operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8.
